Module 5: Improvement Cycles

Welcome to the Active Implementation Module Series. In this module you will learn about improvement cycles and how to begin applying them in your setting.

Learning Objectives

After this module, you should be able to:

  • Knowledge Objectives
    • Describe the Plan, Do, Study, Act, process for improvement
    • Summarize the rationales for using PDSA cycles
    • Identify the types of Improvement Cycles and know when to use them  
  • Practice Objectives
    • Use the Linking Communication Protocol Worksheet to develop a process to improve communication and alignment between two teams or entities
    • Discuss the application of Transformation Zone work to move your work ahead
    • Engage in a systematic “trial and learning” event with your team or partners.

Module Content Structure

This Module’s content is structured via three categories:

  • Definitions – content that describes the meaning of an Active Implementation concept
  • Rationale – content that provides reasons for using the information
  • Key Functions – content that provides an overview of the specific components and actions related to the Active Implementation concept.

In this module, we will be discussing the key functions related to Improvement Cycles, and examples of their use in education.
